US, UK, Australian, EU, Canadian and New Zealand travellers
If you hold a Western passport, you are not visa-exempt for Bali — but the route is refreshingly simple. You enter on a Visa on Arrival or apply for the e-VOA online before you fly.
There is a common misconception that citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, the EU, Canada and New Zealand can simply turn up in Bali without a visa. They cannot. None of these nationalities is visa-exempt for Indonesia. The good news is that all of them are eligible for the Visa on Arrival (VOA) or its online equivalent, the e-VOA. The official fee is IDR 500,000 (roughly USD 30–35), it grants a 30-day stay, and it can be extended once for a further 30 days.
Indonesia grants 30-day visa-free entry only to a short list of nationalities, mostly fellow ASEAN member states. Western passports are not on that list. Instead, they fall into the much larger group of more than ninety nationalities that are eligible for the Visa on Arrival.
This is entirely routine and nothing to worry about. The VOA is a short-stay tourist permit, and Western travellers are precisely who it is designed for. You simply pay the official fee and receive a 30-day entry stamp.
While you can buy the VOA at the airport counter on arrival, we recommend applying online for the e-VOA through the official immigration portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id beforehand. You skip the payment queue, lock in the official fee, and travel with an approval already in your inbox.
Approval is usually granted within minutes to a few hours. At peak periods it can take up to three business days, so applying a few days ahead is sensible.
The VOA and e-VOA both grant an initial 30 days. This can be extended once, for a further 30 days, at the Imigrasi office in Denpasar — giving a maximum stay of 60 days on this entry type. The extension involves a short office appointment and a few working days of processing, which we are happy to handle on your behalf.
The VOA is strictly for tourism, family visits and short business meetings. It is not a work permit and cannot be used for paid employment in Indonesia. If you plan to work remotely for a long period, run a business, or stay beyond 60 days, a different visa is required. Speak to us and we will point you to the appropriate long-stay or work option.
